Inside and Outside
Circle
v Description:
Inside and Outside the Circle is a
technique which is introduced by Spencer Kagan. Inside outside is a terrific
cooperative learning strategy that really engages English language learners.
This technique can give chance to all students to share information at the same
time with different partner in a short time and in such structural way.
Students stand in two concentric circles, facing a partner. The inside circle
faces out; the outside circle faces in. Students ask questions to their
partner, or they may take turns responding to a teacher question(s). Partners
switch roles: outside circle students ask, listen, then praise or coach. After
each question or set of questions are already answer, students in the outer or
inner circle rotate to the next partner.
English language learners need as
many opportunities to speak English as possible. Not only does inside outside
circle give them an opportunity to use their English, it also gives them a
chance to hear English modeling as well. Inside-
outside circle can be used for all grade levels and across the curriculum. Inside-outside circle holds all students accountable for
having something to say. The teacher can use this activity as a formative
assessment by standing in the center of the circle and listening to the conversations
that take place. The objective of this technique is improving students’
speaking and listening ability. Besides the teacher also be able to check
students’ pronunciation when they are speaking.
v Level:
·
I will use this technique for teaching in Junior High School,
especially in grade VII.
v Skill / component:
·
Speaking and Listening skill
v Procedure :
·
Teacher’s
preparation:
1)
Find a subject which will be
discussed, for example about “Next Holiday”.
2)
Prepare the possible pre teach
vocabularies that may be used in applying this technique.
·
The way to use
the technique:
1)
The teacher explains the learning
objective that the
students can speak about their next holiday and listen about their friends’
plan for holiday.
2)
Divide students into 2 equal groups (A and B), one group consists of 4 students.
3)
One group forms an inside circle (A) and the other group (B) will the
form another circle around the outside of the first.
4)
The inside circle turns and faces
the outside circle forming pairs.
5)
The teacher provided a question to
be discussed and assigns either the inside or the outside circle to share their
thoughts to their partner first. When the person finishes, the other
person shares their thoughts.
6)
After discussion with partner, the students (from group A/B) will be cued to rotate (clockwise
or counter clockwise) and face a new partner.
7)
Now turn on the outside circle of
students who gave the information.
8)
To get an accountability, the teacher will ask individuals to share what their
partner said.
(In this part, the
teacher will score each student’s ability in speaking and listening and they
have to share what information that they have gotten from their fiends orally)
v The strenght and
weakness:
·
Strengths:
There are some strenghts of inside-outside the circle teaching technique,
such as:
ü This technique
can improve students’ skill in English especially their skill in speaking and
listening.
ü This technique
can make the students improve their vocabulary and pronunciation and also to review the vocabulary terms.
ü This technique
can make the students get different information at the same time on the
material which is being taught
about “Next Holiday”.
ü This technique can
make the students easier
and fun in learning English.
ü This technique
can help the teacher to measure students’ ability in speaking and listening in
one time.
·
weaknesess:
This technique also has its
own weaknesses, such as :
ü
This technique need a large classroom, so that the teachers will difficult to
apply this technique if the classrooms are too small.
ü
This technique can make the teacher difficult in manage classroom
activities.
ü
This technique is too long to do, so that the students become distracted in remembering the information which they have gotten from their friends.
v Conclusion :
Inside and
Outside the Circle is a technique introduced by Spencer Kagan. This technique can give chance to all students to share
information at the same time with different partner in a short time and in such
structural way. Students stand in two concentric circles, facing a partner and have
discussion. Inside-
outside circle can be used for all grade levels and across the curriculum. This
technique holds all students accountable for
having something to say and to listen. The objective of this technique is
improving students’ speaking and listening
ability. Besides the teacher also be able to check students’ pronunciation when
they are speaking. The students are ask to speak out to
tell the information which has gotten before from their partners, it means that
students’ listening skill also can be measured by the teacher through this
technique. So that, this technique is good to use in teaching speaking and
listening skill in one time and one topic;although, there are also some
weaknesses in this technique it doesn’t a big problem because the strengths in
this technique is dominant than the weaknesses.
